Women's basketball ousted by 'Birds on the road

The UBCO Heat will have to wait to clinch their second consecutive playoff berth after falling 78-50 to the UBC Thunderbirds

VANCOUVER - The UBC Okanagan Heat women's basketball team was unable to complete the weekend sweep of their sister-school rivals, the UBC Thunderbirds, as they fell 78-50 on Saturday at the War Memorial Gym.

The Heat, who shot .450 percent from the floor and .533 percent from three-point range a night prior, fired at just .233 percent and .165 percent as their respective splits in the loss.

The Thunderbirds finished with four double-digit scorers in a strong team effort which saw them snap their three-game losing skid.

With 23 turnovers, UBCO moves to a 1-6 record when they turn the ball over 20 or more times.

TOP PERFORMERS
Kelsey Falk - UBCO
The third-year guard from Vernon, B.C. finished the match with a team-high 13 points, adding eight rebounds with one steal, one assist, and one block.
Olivia Weekes - UBC
The T-Birds' leading scorer showed her offensive prowess in the win, dropping 16 points off of .583 percent shooting. The Winnipeg product added eight rebounds, two steals, and an assist to her stat line.

WHERE THEY SIT
The loss pulls UBCO back to .500, sitting at 9-9 and alone in 10th in Canada West. A win next weekend in one of their final two games, or a single loss by the Lethbridge Pronghorns, would see the Heat clinch a playoff birth for the second straight year.

The win improves the 'Birds' record to 10-6 as they sit tied for sixth in the conference.

UP NEXT
The Heat end their Canada West regular season at home, with a pair of games against the Victoria Vikes (6-9) from The Furnace. Tickets are available one hour before tip-off with Friday's match slated for 7 p.m.
