Women's volleyball pushes No. 3 T-Birds to four sets

Heat hand UBC just their ninth set loss of the season but unable to pull off upset on Saturday in Vancouver

VANCOUVER - The UBC Okanagan Heat women's volleyball team took a set off the U SPORTS No. 3-ranked UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday evening but they were unable to complete the upset as they fell in four sets (16-25, 25-23, 20-25, 12-25) at the War Memorial Gymnasium.

The Thunderbirds found an early stretch of points in the opening set holding a four point advantage over the Heat. Looking to close the gap, the Heat put down two serving aces and five kills, but the T-Birds lead ultimately led them to the first set win 16-25.

The Heat responded in the second set, creating an early three point gap with back-to-back kills shared between Jade Bussard (Red Deer, Alta.) and Sydney Grills (Vancouver, B.C). Holding momentum and finding the point after several extensive rallies, the Heat came on top 25-23 to even the match at 1-1.

The set win for the Heat marked just the ninth time this season that UBC have lost a set in 16 regular season matches.

Opening the third set, the Thunderbirds found an early burst of energy giving them a six point gap between the Heat. Despite creating chances with big swings, the Thunderbirds early lead allowed them to take another set win 25-20.

Coming into the fourth down a set, the Heat were eager to push it to a fifth set and kept the match close, until a late burst of seven points led the Thunderbirds the match win 3-1.
