KELOWNA, B.C. – Despite an impressive performance by
Amaya Perry, which helped to force the No. 1 team in Canada, the Trinity Western Spartans, to five sets, the UBC Okanagan women's volleyball team ultimately were unable to secure a win on Friday night in the Furnace.
The Spartans would open up the match with a first set win, 25-23, and would start the second set with a solid five-point lead. However, UBCO was able to stifle that advantage, turning the Spartans' momentum into their own.
Amaya Perry, a native of Chin, Alta., would kick off a three-point run for the Heat to close out the set 25-23, pairing up with
Natalie Funk (Strathmore, Alta.) for a block, followed by a kill, assisted by sister
Rayn Perry (Chin, Alta.), for the set point.
The Heat's energy caried over into the third set as
Amaya Perry served the Heat along a five-point run early in the set which would see two service aces for Perry and forced the Spartans into a timeout. The Heat would deny the Spartans any chance of a lead all the way up until
Sydney Grills (Vancouver, B.C.) would strike down a kill to close the set 25-23.
The fourth set began in favour of the Heat as they led 17-14, but after a Spartans timeout, the scoring began to even out. Despite
Amaya Perry tallying six kills in this set, the Spartans found a way to squeeze out a 27-25 set win and sway the momentum back in their favour.
That momentum would carry into the fifth set as the visitors pulled out the win with a 15-9 set victory.
