KELOWNA, B.C. –
Gus Goerzen and
Liban Yousef provided some clutch buckets down the stretch to give the UBC Okanagan Heat men's basketball team a 79-75 victory over the Regina Cougars on Saturday evening at The Furnace.
Trailing by 10 points entering the final frame, the Heat rallied with a 28-point fourth quarter to earn the weekend split with the Cougars.
Goerzen, a native of Roberts Creek, B.C., kept the Heat within striking distance all night. When the Heat were down double digits, Goerzen hit clutch buckets to keep his team in it as he finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.
Yousef, a native of Edmonton, was once again a spark for the Heat off the bench. Playing his first weekend series of the year following recovery from off-season surgery, Yousef was able to get tough buckets all night when the Heat needed it most. He finished with 13 points while contributing three rebounds.
Carter Millar (Regina, Sask.) proved to be a problem once again for the Cougars. The forward finished with another monster double-double, adding 29 points and 17 rebounds as he was a problem all weekend for the Heat defence.
TOP PERFORMERS
Gus Goerzen – UBCO
The third-year guard was crucial for the Heat down the stretch. Goerzen hit multiple clutch buckets including two three pointers to keep the Heat within striking distance. His 11 rebounds were a team-high and he showed his presence on defence with a couple blocks.
Carter Millar – Regina
The fifth-year forward was hard to stop for a second consecutive night. He finished with 29 points while shooting 6-for-10 from three-point range. He grabbed a team-high 17 rebounds for his second double-double of the weekend.
WHERE THEY SIT
The Heat improve to 3-5 on the season and are winners of three of their last four games. The three wins match their season total from a year ago with more than half of their schedule still to come. Meanwhile, the Cougars fall to 5-3 and are tied for fifth in the Canada West standings.
