KELOWNA, B.C. – Despite a strong performance by Keaton Mann, the UBC Okanagan Heat men's volleyball team fell in straight sets to the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday evening at The Furnace.
The first set was controlled by the Bisons, halting each of the Heat's attempts to push back the Bisons' lead. The Heat would make an effort to earn the lead, including three kills by Thys Weststrate (Kelowna, B.C.), but the set would be secured by the Bisons 25-16.
The second set would see the two teams locked in a back-and-forth battle for dominance all the way through to the end of the set. The Heat would go on several small runs, including a three-point run thanks to two back-to-back kills from Mann, of Ladner, B.C., assisted by Cade Hudson (Burnaby, B.C.) to put the score at 17-15 for UBCO. Renn Petryk (Edmonton) would also be a force for the Heat this set, hammering down multiple kills, including a key moment near the end of the set.
However, the Bisons would prevail late in the set to take it 28-26.
The third set would open up with the Bisons once again taking control of the scoring, going on a four-point run early in the set to put them up 9-4, followed by another four-point run later in the set. Down 23-14, the Heat made a strong effort to come back, going on a four-point run of their own, including two kills by Seba Manuel (Kelowna, B.C.) and one from Mann, to move the score to 23-18. Ultimately, however, the Heat's comeback hopes were put to a stop as the Bisons took the third set 25-19.
