Ainsa Lluch stars in debut, women's basketball fall to Dinos in opener

Spanish guard Sofia Ainsa Lluch scored a game-high 22 points as the Heat lost 92-88 on Friday evening

CALGARY - Transfer guard Sofia Ainsa Lluch dropped 22 points in her debut with the UBC Okanagan Heat women's basketball team but it was the host Calgary Dinos who came out victorious on Friday evening, winning 92-88 in the season opener for both teams.

Ainsa Lluch, an import from Mahon, Spain, scored nine points in the fourth quarter as her team mounted a comeback but timely three-pointers helped the hosting Dinos edge out a win.

Kelowna, B.C., forward Jaeli Ibbetson also had an impressive stat line in the season opener with 21 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

KEY PLAYERS
Sofia Ainsa Lluch - UBCO

The fourth-year guard scored 22 points in her first regular season appearance for the Heat, adding three rebounds and a pair of assists.

Amelie Collin - Calgary
The second-year guard from Rimoushi, Que., dropped 13 points in the Dinos win and chipped in with three assists and four steals.

WHERE THEY SIT
The Heat, who fell one point shy of tying their program record for points in a game, start the season at 0-1 while the Dinos get their first win of the season and sit at 1-0.

UP NEXT
The two teams meet again tomorrow in Calgary with tipoff set for 3 p.m. The game will be live on Canada West TV.
