KELOWNA, B.C. – Jahmaal Gardner (Brentwood, New York) broke the heart of the UBCO Heat men's basketball team as he hit a 3 pointer with 1.5 seconds left to propel his Brandon Bobcats to a 90-89 victory on Saturday evening at the Furnace.
The Heat were down nine after the first 20 minutes but a strong second half allowed them to close the gap and give themselves a chance. Lansana Nwosu (Scarborough, Ontario) was the catalyst for this Heat offense as he had a team high 17 points and brought energy to both sides of the court.
Gus Goerzen (Roberts Creek, B.C.) filled the stat sheet for the Heat as he had a team high eight rebounds and three assists while adding two blocks to his 12 points.
The Heat outshot the Bobcats from the field 52.2 percent to 44.7 percent, UBCO's best shooting mark since the 2017-18 season.
TOP PERFORMERS
Lansana Nwosu – UBCO
The fifth-year guard paced the Heat offense with 17 points while adding six rebounds, two assists, and three steals. He was a spark on the defensive end which energized the team to make a run to get themselves back into the game.
Jahmaal Gardner – Brandon
The fifth-year guard was clutch for the Bobcats as he poured in 17 points to go along with two assists and four steals. In the biggest moment of the game Gardner was able to hit a last second three-pointer to give his team the victory.
WHERE THEY SIT
The loss for the Heat puts their record at 0-3 to start the season and in a tie for last place in the Canada West standings. The Bobcats improve to 2-1 on the season as they sit in the middle of the pack in the standings.
