Men's soccer playoff hopes on thin ice following loss to UNBC

After a 4-1 loss to Timberwolves on Sunday, the Heat must win their final two games to have a chance at reaching the postseason

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. - The UBC Okanagan Heat men's soccer team were dealt a serious blow in their push for the Canada West playoffs on Sunday as they lost 4-1 to the UNBC Timberwolves.

Heading into the second game of the weekend doubleheader with the Timberwolves, the Heat got off to a fast start as they looked to extend their five-game point streak. Second-year forward Jacobo Saenz Ramos of Monterrey, Mexico, opened the scoring in the contest, burying his fourth goal of the season to sit one off the team lead.
The Heat continued to control play for the remainder of the first half, playing tic-tac-toe around their opponents and finding opportunities in the box. However, they weren't able to extend their lead as they headed into halftime with a one goal advantage.

The host Timberwolves responded to the deficit by coming out firing to start the second half. They would tie the match just three minutes in and would go on to add three more goals to hand the Heat their first loss since September 30.

TOP PERFORMERS
Jacobo Saenz Ramos - UBCO

Saenz Ramos scored the Heat's only goal on Sunday afternoon as he continued to take advantage of his opportunities in the attacking third. His four goals on the year are tied for the third-most ever scored in a single season by a Heat in Canada West play.

Toranosuke Omori - UNBC
The second-year midfielder from Tokyo, Japan, Omori brought back the Timberwolves momentum scoring the match tying goal in the 48th minute. Omori, with his quick feet, was a dominant attacking player in the final third for UNBC on Sunday.

WHERE THEY SIT
With the loss, the Heat now face a must-win scenario for each of their remaining two games as they sit in fifth place in the Canada West Pacific division with a 4-5-4 record, four points behind the UFV Cascades. Meanwhile, the Timberwolves secured their spot in the Canada West playoffs with the victory and now sit at 7-4-3 on the year, in a tie on points with the TRU WolfPack for second in the division.

UP NEXT
The Heat face their first must-win game on Friday, October 21 as they travel to Vancouver to take on their sister school, the UBC Thunderbirds. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. and can be seen live on Canada West TV.
