Men's basketball drops second straight decision to Timberwolves

Box Score

KELOWNA, B.C. - The UBC Okanagan Heat men's basketball team suffered their second straight loss since their return to action in 2022 as they fell to the UNBC Timberwolves 98-83 on Saturday night.

Coming off a devastating buzzer-beater game-winner the night before, the Heat were looking to split the weekend set with the Timberwolves. However, they were slow to warm up, seeing only one shot fall in the first five minutes. Coming out of the first quarter the Heat were down 12 and were unable to take a lead throughout the match.

The Heat showed signs of promise throughout as has been a recurring theme in their past matchups, closing a 17-point deficit to just six at late in the contest. Scarborough, Ont., product Kevin Hamlet showed great improvement from the night before, after staying late post-game on Friday to get more shots in. The third-year forward dropped in 18 points and eight rebounds, doing most of his work in the mid-range as that has been a part of his game that has become very consistent.

The Timberwolves came out strong after their thrilling win the night before, shooting 54.4 percent from the field, making it difficult for the Heat to defend. Spencer Ledoux of Kamloops, B.C., had himself a game to lead the visitors. Finding a very comfortable rhythm in the paint, Ledoux led the Timberwolves with 28 points on 13-of-16 shooting from the floor. Tyrell Laing of Prince George, B.C., aided his big man, adding 21 points, eight of which came at the line.

The Heat showed their defensive ability yet again as their press made an impact and helped their comeback. Jesse Vogel of Las Vegas, Nev., had back-to-back steals that brought the Heat to within six with two and a half minutes left. However, the come back attempt would fall short as costly fouls and missed opportunities led to UBCO's eventual downfall.

Back in action next week, the Heat will travel to Langley where they will face off against Trinity Western. All action can be streamed on CanadaWest.tv presented by Co-op.
