Box Score KELOWNA, B.C. - First-year forward Molly Mullin's goal in the 79th minute tied the game for the UBC Okanagan Heat women's soccer team as they earned a draw against rival Thompson Rivers Wolfpack on Saturday afternoon at Nonis Field.
In the opening game of the President Cup, the annual inter-school competition between UBCO and Thompson Rivers, it was Canada West rookies on both sides of the pitch who stole the show with goals coming from UBCO's Mullin and TRU's Maria Iannone.
Hailing from Penticton, B.C., Iannone broke the tie in the 71st minute finding space behind the Heat defenders and lifting a shot past Molly Race's (Vernon, B.C.) left side. The rookie checked into the game for the first time in her Canada West career on Saturday and it took all of 10 minutes to make an impact with her first goal for the Wolfpack.
Mullin would answer the call for the Heat nine minutes later. The rookie from Surrey, B.C., like Iannone, found the back of the net in her first time on the pitch in a Canada West match. Rhema Batchondo, also from Surrey, B.C., would find an open Mullin on the top of the box as she made no mistake finding the bottom left corner to tie the game.
Heat goalkeeper Race, making her first career home start, made eight saves to earn her first result with the blue and gold. Marrissa Young of Calgary, would make two saves for the visiting Wolfpack.
Both teams earned their first point of the season as their records move to 0-2-1, respectively, for the campaign.
The two teams will be back at it again on Sunday afternoon as they close out their season series at Nonis Field. Catch the action live on CanadaWest TV present by Co-op starting at 1 p.m.
