Box Score LANGLEY, B.C. – The UBC Okanagan Heat surrendered two goals in quick succession early in the second half of Saturday's rematch with the Trinity Western Spartans as they fell 2-0 at Chase Office Field.
After the two teams were scoreless through the opening 45 minutes, the Spartans got goals from Kathryn Harvey of Coquitlam, B.C., in the 50th minute and Madilyn Melnychuk of Langley, B.C., of the 51st minute to break the deadlock.
Despite the Heat playing the Spartans tough through the remainder of the match, they were unable to generate enough offensive opportunities on a wet afternoon in Langley.
The Heat's best opportunity of the match came in the 63rd minute. Stefanie Young of Kelowna, B.C., raced in on the left side before firing a shot just over the bar from a nearly identical spot from where she scored her team's opening goal on Friday.
Rookie netminder Molly Race of Vernon, B.C., picked up her second loss of the season making three saves for the Heat. Spartans' keeper Hannah Miller of Langley, B.C., wasn't forced into a save in picking up the win.
Ultimately, this weekend was a much stronger showing for the Heat against Trinity Western, a perennial contender for the Canada West and U SPORTS Championship, then they've had in the past. In their lone meeting with the Spartans back in 2019, UBCO was blanked 8-0 by the Spartans and hadn't scored against their BC counterparts since 2015.
The Heat will now head back to Kelowna and get set for their home opener on Saturday, September 18 against their rivals from Kamloops, the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack. The game will also mark the first showdown in the annual President's Cup competition between the two Universities.
Kickoff on Saturday is set for 1 p.m. at Nonis Field.
