Box Score KELOWNA, B.C. - The playoff hopes of the UBC Okanagan Heat women's soccer team were dashed on Friday evening as they lost 1-0 to the UFV Cascades, knocking the home squad out of playoff contention.
The Cascades, holding the third of three guaranteed playoff spots in the West Division, played a solid match on both ends of the pitch, holding the Heat to a single shot on net, while mustering up nine of their own. The playoff-bound Cascades outshot the Heat 17-7 in the winning effort.
A pair of Surrey, B.C., products linked up for the game's lone goal in the 67th minute. Taylor Nekic headed home a Harneet Dadrao corner for her first marker of the season, giving UFV the game's decisive goal.
After going up a goal, the Cascades locked up defensively, securing the win and their playoff berth.
Vernon's Molly Race made six stops for the hosting Heat, while her opposition, Joven Sandhu of Surrey, B.C. stopped the lone shot she faced for the clean sheet.
Race's save total for the season is up to 60 on the season, the highest of any Heat keeper since 2015-16.
The home side Heat were stumped by Fraser Valley's defensive tactics, with the exception of a couple of chances off the foot of UBCO's leading goal scorer Stefanie Young.
Young would end the game with three shots in 90 minutes of playtime. She'll look to add to her goal total tomorrow afternoon when the teams rematch at 4 p.m. on Nonis Sports Field.
Prior to kickoff, the Heat will honour their four graduating seniors, including Erica Lampert, Jill Hunt, Anastazia Ziros and Kacee Ougden.
