Offensive explosion sees women's soccer past Victoria

Box Score

KELOWNA, B.C. - It was a Saturday afternoon to remember for the UBC Okanagan Heat women's soccer team as they rolled over the Victoria Vikes by a score of 4-0 at Nonis Sports Field.

The Heat's offensive outburst was led by fourth-year midfielder Erica Lampert of Prince George, B.C., and second-year forward Stefanie Young,of Kelowna, B.C. The two had a hand in all four-goals for the home team as Lampert scored twice, including the game-winning goal in the first half, while Young added a goal and an assist.

The four goals marked the first time since the Heat joined the Canada West conference that they had scored four goals in a game.

Lampert, a graduate of Kelowna Secondary, got the scoring starting in the first half when she one-timed a cross, deflecting it off a Victoria defender and into the back of the net. The goal marked just her second in a Heat uniform for Lampert who was making her 49th career start for the Heat.

The Heat's second goal would come from a usual suspect in Young. After finding space behind the Vikes' backline, the team's leading scorer sent a laser into the top corner, setting a new mark for single-season goals by a Heat player in Canada West competition with her fifth of the year.

The tally moved her past Courtney Hemmerling, who scored four goals as a member of the Heat back in 2016.

Just two minutes later, it was Lampert again, this time from distance as she took a chance from 30 yards out and found the top corner past Vikes keeper Kayley Lidstone of Victoria, B.C.

Jill Hunt, a second half substitution, would score the Heat's fourth goal off a Young rebound. The insurance marker was the fourth-year's from Delta's first of the season, and second of her career.

Lidstone would make one save for the slipping Vikes, who have now lost four in a row. Between the pipes for the Heat, Molly Race recorded her second straight clean sheet and win, as her squad makes up ground in the playoff race.

The weekend sweep sees the Heat's record improve to 2-5-3, as the Vikes fall to 4-4-2. With the result, the Heat sit just three points behind the Calgary Dinos, who currently hold the final playoff spot between the West and Central divisions in Canada West.

Next on tap for the Heat is a matchup with the UFV Cascades as their homestand continues October 22nd and 23rd. Both games are scheduled for 4 PM at Nonis Sports Field.
