RECAP: Regina surges past Heat thanks to hot start

Box Score

Regina, S.K. - A balanced attack from the Regina Cougars would be too much to handle for the Heat men's basketball team as they fell 92-53 on Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The game was controlled from the opening tip by the Cougars as they led by 15 after the first quarter and 29 at halftime.

Aldrich Berrios had 17 points, five boards and four assists on the night while Triston Matthews had 16 points and six board. Hafith Moallin also made his return from injury and had played 12 minutes in his first action since Nov.24th.

Five Regina players finished in double-figures, led by Kameron Vales who had 15 points including four made triples off the bench. Other players in double-digits included Carter Millar, Brayden Kuski, Myles Hamilton and Greishe Clerjuste

"We started off well, showed off some energy, and were fortunate enough to shoot the ball well," Cougars head coach Steve Burrows said. "UBC Okanagan is a well-coached team and we know it's going to be a much tougher game tomorrow. We expect that we're going to have to make some adjustments."

The Cougars finished 17-for-34 from three-point range as a team, led by Vales going 4-for-6 and Kuski hitting three of his four attempts from long range.

The Cougars (9-4) and UBC Okanagan will close out their weekend set on Saturday night at the CKHS. Game time is set for 8:00.

First half:

Both teams started off hot from behind the arc as they traded triples on each team's first possession but it was all Cougars the rest of the frame as they jumped out to a 13-3 advantage. This 10 point lead would grow as they continued to hit shots from all over the place and would score 28 points in the first 10 minutes. The second quarter was much of the same as the home team was able to shoot 61% in the second quarter alone, building a 55-26 halftime lead.

Second half:

The final 20 minutes were a near formality as both teams started to go deeper into their benches. Tyler Jardine would come off the bench in to hit two triples in the fourth quarter but the game had already been decided and would finish 92-53 Regina.
