PREVIEW: Women's basketball search for elusive first win

What you need to know

  • Back at home this weekend UBCO hopes their home court will lead to success over the visiting Manitoba Bisons. Tip-off on Friday night is at 6 p.m. The last game of 2017 will be the rematch with tip-off at 5 p.m.
  • UBCO shoot decidedly better on their home court: 39.8% from the field and 36.4% from three as opposed to 31.7% and 19.7%. Oddly they shoot better from the charity stripe on the road: (67.6% away, 55.6% at home).

Recent results

- The women are coming off back to back double-digit losses to the UFV Cascades last weekend by scores of 65-48 and 65-37. The last Friday night on home court UBCO nearly took down a top ten team in the Alberta Pandas (67-60).

Offensive struggles:

- The offensive has sputtered lately as the Heat are averaging just 51 points a game in their last four contests after scoring almost 64 points a game in their opening four match ups

- Turnovers have proved costly over the last couple of games as the team is averaging almost 18 turnovers a contest.

- Usually a superb three-point shooting team, the Heat rank 14th in the conference from behind the arc shooting just 27.5% this season.

Players to watch:

- Emma Jonas has shown great growth in her offensive game as she leads the team scoring 8.8 points a contest. Last year the point guard averaged just 2.9 points a game.

- Forward Jordan Korol continues to be a presence down low for the team as she is the leading rebounder on the team at 6.8 boards a game.

Head to Head (Man vs UBCO) (2-1): There has only been three matchups of these geographically challenged foes. The Heat won the first two (74-61, Jan 6, 2012 in Kelowna; 75-71OT, Dec 1, 2012 in Winnipeg) and then lost the most recent result 74-67, Feb 1, 2014 in Kelowna.

Scouting the Bisons:

- Mantioba come into this game with a record of 4-6 but have won four out of their last five including back to back wins against Mount Royal two weekends ago.

- One of the better scoring teams in the Canada West, the Bisons' average nearly 70 points a contest

Players to watch:

- Taylor Randall and Emma Thompson both average over 13 points a game so far this season. Randall comes into the game as one of the conferences best free-throw shooters at 82% (23-28). Thompson does it from behind the arc, as she 39% shooter from deep which leads the team.
