CALGARY, Alta. — The UBCO Heat were held off the scoresheet in a 2-0 loss to the No. 7 ranked Mount Royal Cougars on Sunday afternoon at Stadium Field. The Cougars kept the Heat under steady pressure throughout, outshooting them 23-6, while the Heat managed three attempts on target.
Ronan Woodroffe was busy between the posts, making nine saves over the full 90 minutes to keep the Heat within reach until the very end.
Carter Brown led the Heat attack with three shots, testing MRU's Sjard Strauss once, while
Allan Yin put both of his attempts on goal.
Finn Marshall was the driving force for the Cougars, netting the game-winner, adding an assist, and leading all players with seven shots, three of which were on target. Thomas Stuber made the most of his lone chance, while Bwidju Mutongolo set up the opening goal to go along with his three shots. Strauss turned aside all three shots he faced to record the clean sheet.
The Cougars were in the drivers seat for the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the Heat 10-2 and putting five of them on target. Woodroffe held firm with four saves, but Marshall broke through in the 31st minute off a feed from Mutongolo just a minute after an overturned offside goal to officially send the Heat into the break trailing 1-0.
Despite a more tame start to the first few minutes of the second half, the pressure only grew as the time ticked on. The Cougars outshot the Heat 13-4 and earned seven corners to the Heat's two. Woodroffe stood tall and added five more saves, and Yin put two late shots on target as UBCO looked to get on the board. Marshall then turned provider in the 84th minute, setting up Stuber for the half's lone goal to seal the 2-0 result.
The UBCO Heat return home looking to get one in to the win column for the first time this season as they host the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7:45 p.m. at Nonis Sports Field.
