FERNDALE, Wash. – Abigail Yakemchuk earned her first top-three university result with a second-place showing at the Bill Roe Cross Country Classic at Hovander Homestead Park on Saturday.
"Today was a great start to the season with some very strong performances led by Abigail," said head coach Malindi Elmore. "We were impressed by how the women moved up really well in the field and finished strong. This was a solid start to the year, and we will be ready to face more Canada West teams in two weeks."
The UBCO Heat women's team finished fourth in the team standings in the 6-kilometre race, while the men's team was ninth in the 8-kilometre event.
Yakemchuk's time of 21 minutes, 2.8 seconds placed her just over 12 seconds ahead of third-place finisher Madeline Harrison of the Central Washington Wildcats.
Ethan Nozick finished with the top men's team result, placing 46th in 26:21.9.
The Western Washington Vikings swept the team titles at their home meet.
