KELOWNA, B.C. — On a night where he was celebrated as a Graduating Senior, fifth-year guard
Jalen Shirley saved one of his best performances in a Heat uniform for last, breaking UBCO's all-time record for career points and assists in a nail-biting 82-79 defeat to the UFV Cascades at the UBCO Gymnasium.
Needing 11 points and six assists to own both Heat records, the Brampton, Ont., native poured in 24 points while adding exactly six assists, to go along with four rebounds and one steal to end his Heat career in style.
Shirley got the scoring record out of the way early on, connecting on a contested three-pointer midway through the second quarter to break Aldrich Berrios' previous UBCO record of 1483 career points. He would go on to finish the game at 1497 points, ranking him 30th all-time in Canada West history and 82nd all-time in U SPORTS history.
The health and exercise sciences major would need the entire 40 minutes of basketball to break the assists record, setting up a
Mathias Schertzer's layup with 22 seconds to go in the fourth quarter for his sixth of the contest. That dime moved him past former teammate Hafith Moallin for the career mark, giving him 344 as a member of the Heat.
The assist from Shirley pulled the Heat to within one in the contest, after they trailed by as many as 17 in the second half but UBCO's comeback attempt would fall just short in their final game of the regular season.
Aside from Shirley's big night,
Isaak Moore dropped 15 points, including hitting three 3-pointers, while
Mike Adarkwah-Nti added 14 points, making all seven of his free throw attempts.
For UFV, Ismael Hernandez topped the score sheet with 25 points and added seven rebounds. Dario Lopez pitched in 13 points, collected eight rebounds, and snagged three steals.
Prior to the contest, both Shirley and forward
David Usuomon, also from Brampton, were honoured for the five-year careers with the blue and gold.
