Heat fall in straight sets to No. 2 Thunderbirds

UBCO unable to keep pace with nationally-ranked UBC on the road

VANCOUVER, B.C. — The UBCO Heat women's volleyball team (5-14) fell to the U SPORTS No. 2-ranked UBC Thunderbirds (16-3) in straight sets, 25-13, 25-14, 25-15, at War Memorial Gym on Friday.

Kylan Finseth led the Heat with 14 assists and added 12 digs. Marija Josipovic contributed five kills and matched her kill total with five digs. Korey Jenkins made an impact with four kills on a .429 hitting percentage and collected three digs. 

Jocelyn Lenarcic was strong for UBC, recording seven kills on seven attempts. Elizabeth Lee made a significant impact from the service line, delivering five aces while also contributing five kills and seven digs. Setter Issy Robertshaw orchestrated the offence effectively, tallying 21 assists and adding three service aces to her performance. 

UBC controlled the first set with a strong defence and service performance, leading to a 25-13 win. UBC's Lenaric and Robertshaw combined for multiple blocks early on, setting the tone defensively. Despite a few attack errors, UBCO managed a brief rally with kills from Korey Jenkins and Ali Rathlef, yet struggled to contain UBC's consistent pressure.

The Thunderbirds surged ahead in the second set, capitalizing on seven service aces and multiple blocks to secure a 25-14 advantage. Key contributions included Lenarcic's effective offence with three kills, while Robertshaw directed the attack with numerous assists. The Heat got blocks from Natalie Funk and Ali Rathlef but were unable to overcome the home team's consistent scoring.

UBCO started the third set strong with a 3-0 lead, supported by a block from Funk and Madison Gardner. However, UBC shifted the momentum with a decisive 8-0 run, highlighted by two service aces from Robertshaw. UBC sealed the set 25-15, using effective serving to maintain control and secure the win.

The Heat will wrap up their season on Saturday when they square off with the Thunderbirds once again. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m. and fans can catch the game live on CanadaWest.tv presented by BioSteel.
