HEAT THIS WEEK: Women’s basketball opens playoff run, volleyball closes regular season on the road

The Heat women’s basketball team opens the Canada West playoffs on the road against Brandon, while volleyball heads to Vancouver for a pair of tough matches against the Thunderbirds

KELOWNA, B.C. - The final weekend of the 2025-26 Canada West regular season has arrived, with the UBCO Heat volleyball teams closing out their schedules before turning their focus to the postseason.

Meanwhile, the Heat women's basketball team will open postseason action on the road, travelling to Regina to face the Brandon Bobcats in the play-in round on Friday, looking to advance to the Quarter-finals on Saturday against the host Cougars.

Down in the lower mainland, the Heat volleyball teams will face a crucial road test against their sister school, the UBC Thunderbirds. The men's team has already secured a playoff berth and can finish as high as second in the conference standings. As for the women, they will be looking for strong results against second-ranked team in the country in one final push for a playoff berth.

The Heat (10-10), seeded fifth for the playoffs as the third-place team from the Pacific division, travel to Regina this weekend to open the Canada West playoffs on Friday against the 12th seeded Brandon Bobcats (7-13).

UBCO last faced Brandon in November 2022, sweeping both matchups that season against the Prairie opponent. The Bobcats enter the postseason after dropping their final two regular-season games, momentum the Heat will look to leverage as they take the court.

The team will lean on leading scorer Kanani Coon, who averaged 12.4 points per game during the regular season, as they look to secure a position in Saturday's quarter-finals.

Should the Heat win on Friday, they will advance to face the fourth-seeded Regina Cougars (17-3) with a spot in the semifinals on the line.

The Heat (5-13) are coming off a bye week and travel to Vancouver this weekend for a crucial two-game series against the U SPORTS No. 2-ranked UBC Thunderbirds, continuing their fight for a spot in the 2025-26 playoffs.

These matches mark the final regular-season games for the team and possibly the last for the team's outstanding graduates Natalie Funk, Madison Gardner, and Chloe Ladd, who will be looking to give it their all against the tough (15-3) opponent.

The Heat need at least one victory, as well as some help from the Brandon Bobcats (3-15), who are facing the Winnipeg Wesmen (6-12), the team holding down the final conference playoff berth, in order to qualify.

Coming off a bye weekend, the U SPORTS No. 4-ranked Heat (15-3) are well rested and recharged as they head to Vancouver for a thrilling doubleheader against the No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds (17-1) to close out the regular season.

These games will help determine the Heat's playoff seeding, with first through fourth place spots on the line as they go head-to-head against the Vancouver campus. Regardless of the results, the Heat will be set to host their first-ever Canada West playoff series from February 27-March 1.

The last time the team was in action, two weeks ago, they split their series against the Mount Royal Cougars. Despite the Saturday night loss, veteran setter Zach van Geel not only set the UBCO career assists record on Friday night but added another 32 assists on Saturday, bringing his career total to 2,771, ranking 13th all-time in Canada West history. The team will look to him to help build momentum heading into this weekend's matchups.
