Box Score KELOWNA, B.C. — UBCO guard
Jalen Shirley broke his own single-season scoring record on Saturday night, dropping 26 points as the Heat (3-15) lost 80-69 to the Trinity Western Spartans (9-11) at the UBCO Gymnasium.
Shirley, a fifth-year guard from Brampton, Ont., broke the record with a free throw late in the fourth quarter, giving him 360 points on the season, surpassing the 359 he scored in 2024-25. He would add two more points before the night was done, leaving him at 362 points on the year with two games remaining in the regular season.
His performance also moved him to within 41 points of setting a new UBCO career scoring record as he sit at 1443 points with the Heat, trailing only Aldrich Berrios' 1483 points he scored from 2014-2019.
Anthony Brady also had a strong night for UBCO, matching his career-high with 12 points and bolstering the defence with seven steals while adding eight rebounds. Brady's seven steals is one off the UBCO single-game record of eight held by
Jonathan Haughton.
Jack Vandenberg spearheaded Trinity Western with 27 points, making 10 of 15 field goals and sinking seven 3-pointers. Logan Stewart added 19 points, including four 3-pointers, plus five steals and two assists.
In a game that was close at halftime, with the two teams tied at 31, the Spartans used a 17-0 run to start the second half, providing the cushion they would need to pick up the victory.
Next up, UBCO will open up their final weekend of play in 2025-26 when they take on the UFV Cascades on Friday, Feb. 6, with the game tipping off at 7:30 p.m.
