Women's soccer battles hard in 1-0 defeat to No. 8 Spartans

Heat outshoot nationally-ranked Trinity Western 11-5 on their home pitch but unable to pick up points on the road

LANGLEY, B.C. — The UBCO Heat women's soccer team (2-4-2) narrowly fell to the U SPORTS No. 8-ranked Trinity Western Spartans (6-2-0) in a tense 1-0 match up at Chase Office Field on Saturday night.

Despite the Heat's offensive pressure with 11 shots and five on goal, Trinity Western's defence held firm, with their goalie recording five saves to secure the shutout. The lone goal of the game came in the first half, proving decisive as UBCO could not find an equalizer.

The first half between UBCO and Trinity Western began with a defensive stance from both teams. Trinity Western took an early lead in the 10th minute when Mansha Sidhu converted a penalty kick.

The Heat had a chance to equalize in the 21st minute with a penalty kick by Annika Gross, but it was saved by Yasmine Pahal.

UBCO would continue pressing as Haden Thomas and Nina Louis each had shots on goal, both saved by Pahal to maintain Trinity Western's 1-0 lead at the end of the half.

The Heat continued to press for the equalizer in the second half with several corner kicks, including attempts by Abigail Taneda and Annabelle Walker, and shots from Gross and Katie Scarth, though none found the target.

UBCO's Maria Georgacacos forced a save from Trinity Western's goalkeeper Yasmine Pahal in the 90th minute, but the match concluded with UBCO unable to break through Trinity Western's defence.

Gross led the team in shots with three attempts, two of which were on goal. Georgacacos contributed three shots, with one being on target. Allyson Ford played the full 90 minutes in goal, recording one save and conceding one goal. Louis added to the offensive efforts with a shot on goal.

In their next game, the Heat will travel to Vancouver to face the U SPORTS No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds. The match is set for Friday, October 3 with kickoff at 6 p.m.
