Box Score 1 KELOWNA, B.C. - The UBCO Heat women's basketball team opened its 2025 preseason schedule with three matches in Ontario against tough OUA opposition this weekend.
Facing three teams who combined for 49 regular season victories a year ago, the Heat earned an impressive 80-68 victory over the Guelph Gryphons in their opening game on Friday night, before dropping decisions to the TMU Bold on Saturday and the Brock Badgers on Sunday.
Taking on the Gryphons on Friday, the Heat got a strong performance from third-year forward
Tennyson McCarthy, who dropped 17 points and 13 rebounds in the victory. Second-year guard
Tsuki Tsuzuki added 11 points in 17 minutes off the bench while seven other members of the Heat scored at least five points.
Saturday, UBCO took on the Bold in Toronto, who finished last season ranked ninth in U SPORTS. The Heat got a big performance from third-year transfer
Kanani Coon, as she dropped 18 points, but Coach Mitchell's squad fell 64-43.
On Sunday, UBCO tangled with the Badgers in St. Catharines where they lost 86-62. Fifth-year guard
Aiko Williams led the way for the Heat with 10 points.
Preseason play for the Heat continues this weekend when they take on the Alberta Pandas and Manitoba Bisons on home court. The matchup against Alberta is set for Friday, September 26 at 4 p.m. followed by a meeting with the Bisons on Sunday, September 27 at 4 p.m. at the UBCO Gymnasium.
