Men's soccer defeated on the road by Golden Bears

Heat unable to contain high-powered Alberta attack in 5-0 loss

EDMONTON, Alta. — The UBC Okanagan Heat men's soccer team (0-6-1) suffered a tough loss on Saturday afternoon, falling 5-0 to the Alberta Golden Bears at Foote Field.

The first half saw Alberta take an early lead, with Jackson Belbin scoring in the 6th minute, marking his first goal of the season. Despite the Heat's attempts to respond, including shots from Andrew Matsugu and Varun Kothary, Alberta's goalkeeper Trystan Read made key saves to maintain the lead.

Alberta extended their advantage in the 32nd minute when Patrick Kondraciuk, assisted by Belbin, scored to make it 2-0.

Early in the second half, Alberta's Frankroy Cain capitalized on a corner kick opportunity, scoring a goal in the 54th minute to extend the lead to 3-0.

After the goal, the game got chippy as multiple yellow cards were handed out to both teams.

In the 62nd minute, UBCO's Sam Cote, already sitting on a yellow card, took a second yellow and was shown a red, reducing the Heat to ten players.

Alberta took advantage of the situation, with Cain scoring again in the 68th minute, assisted by Rodane Cato. Anson Minty sealed Alberta's victory with a goal in the 87th minute, concluding the game at 5-0.

Jacobo Saenz Ramos led the Heat's offensive efforts with two shots, while Andrew Matsugu also had two shots, one of which was on goal, as he pushed forward from his position. Ronan Woodroffe finished the match with three saves.

The Heat will remain in Edmonton as they get set to face off against the MacEwan Griffins on Sunday afternoon, September 21. The match is set for 1:30 p.m.
