Women's soccer falls to top-ranked Thunderbirds at Homecoming

No. 1-ranked UBC spoiled the party at Nonis Sports Field on Friday night with a decisive victory

KELOWNA, B.C. — The UBC Okanagan Heat women's soccer team (2-3-1) suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the U SPORTS No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds (8-0-0) on Friday night at Nonis Sports Field.

Playing in front of a boisterous Homecoming crowd, the Heat started the match strong as they looked to avenge a 2-0 loss to the Thunderbirds back in August.

However, UBC took control of the game with three goals in five minutes midway through the half. Jayda Thompson, Ella Sunde and Sienna Gibson found the back of the net to give the vistors an advantage they would carry into the break.

The Thunderbirds would add two more goals in the second half off the foot of Maddy Norman, despite the Heat pushing into the Thunderbirds box on multiple occasions.

Heat goalkeeper Allyson Ford, making her second career start for UBCO, recorded six saves for UBCO, facing 11 shots in the match. Eleni Georgacacos contributed offensively with two shots while Haden Thomas managed to put her lone shot on goal.

Looking ahead, the Heat will open up a four-game road trip next weekend when they travel to Abbotsford, B.C., for a matchup against the UFV Cascades on Friday, September 26. The game is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
