KELOWNA, B.C. — The UBC Okanagan Heat men's soccer team (0-5-1) suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of the Lethbridge Pronghorns (2-1-3) by a score of 1-0 win at Nonis Field on Saturday evening.
UBC Okanagan and Lethbridge engaged in a defensive battle during the first half, with both teams unable to find the back of the net. The Heat made an early push with several shots, notably a header from
Charlie Prefontaine in the seventh minute and a shot by
Malachi Emerson in the 40th minute, both saved by Lethbridge's Tegan Romaine.
The Pronghorns Bronson Schlichter also tested UBCO's
Ronan Woodroffe with a header midway through the half, which was saved. Despite several attempts from both sides, the teams went into the half-time break scoreless.
The second half began with the Heat conceding a penalty which was converted by Lethbridge's Kai Sakaguchi in the 55th minute, marking his fourth goal of the season.
Despite several attempts, the Heat could not capitalize on their offensive opportunities, including chances for both
Andrew Matsugu and
Alex Sol. Lethbridge's goalkeeper Tegan Romaine made a notable save late in the match on
Allan Yin, helping Lethbridge hold onto their 1-0 lead.
Ronan Woodroffe, in goal, recorded three saves while allowing one goal over 90 minutes.
Oliver Deveau led the team with four shots.
The next challenge for the Heat sees them heading to Edmonton, Alta., to take on the Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday, September 20. Kickoff is set for 1:15 p.m. as they look to secure an away victory.
