Women's soccer falls at home to defending national champions

Heat battle UBC for 90 minutes but come up short by a 2-0 scoreline

KELOWNA, B.C. — The UBC Okanagan Heat women's soccer team (0-1-1) was defeated by the UBC Thunderbirds (4-0-0) by a 2-0 victory on Saturday at Nonis Sports Field.

UBC maintained consistent offensive pressure throughout the first half against UBCO, with Sienna Gibson scoring the only goal in the 25th minute, assisted by Jayda Thompson. UBC's aggressive play resulted in multiple shots, including attempts by Ava Alexander and Holly Whelan, both saved by the Heat's goalkeeper Talia Gagnon. Despite the Heat's efforts, they were unable to score, leaving the half with UBC leading 1-0.

The second half began with UBCO and UBC competing closely, as UBC's Victoria Conkhite had an early shot saved by Gagnon in the 48th minute. UBC faced multiple offside calls but maintained offensive pressure, highlighted by several corner kicks taken by Taiya Dennehy and Harrison. UBC eventually broke through with a goal by Thompson in the 82nd minute, increasing their lead to 2-0. Despite a shot from the Heat's Megan Sun saved by Emma Sparrow in the 65th minute, UBC was able to hold off any further attempts by UBCO en route to their fourth-straight win.

Gagnon was strong for the Heat with six saves in the match.

Looking ahead, the Heat will host the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday, September 5 at 5:30 p.m. The match will take place at Nonis Sports Field.
