Men's soccer drops decision to Thunderbirds

After a strong opening half from the Heat, UBC found another gear in the second half to earn a 4-1 victory

KELOWNA, B.C. — The UBC Okanagan Heat men's soccer team (0-2-0) suffered a 4-1 loss at the hands of their sister-school rivals, the UBC Thunderbirds (4-0-0) on Saturday at Nonis Field.

The match between the two rivals saw an evenly contested first half. UBC opened the scoring with a goal by Theo Afework in the 27th minute, assisted by Luke Norman, marking Afework's first goal of the season. UBCO responded quickly, equalizing in the 31st minute with Charlie Prefontaine finding the net, assisted by Andrew Matsugu. Both goalkeepers, Ronan Woodroffe for UBCO and Jack Garner for UBC, were active, making several saves to keep the score level at 1-1 by the end of the half.

The second half began with UBC maintaining offensive pressure, highlighted by Henri Godbout scoring a goal in the 50th minute with an assist from Markus Kaiser, bringing the score to 2-1. UBC continued to dominate with multiple corner kicks and shots, resulting in a goal by Eric Lajeunesse in the 60th minute, assisted by Oliver Herbert, increasing their lead to 3-1. UBC's Max Comsia further extended the lead to 4-1 in the 76th minute, assisted by Luke Norman, marking his third goal of the season.

Despite attempts from UBCO, including shots from Matsugu and Murray Ogilvie, UBC's defence and Garner kept them from closing the gap, concluding the match with a 4-1 victory for UBC.

Woodroffe made a significant impact as goalkeeper with a season-high 10 saves over 90 minutes. Prefontaine was the only player to find the net for UBCO, scoring one goal from his single shot on goal. Matsugu contributed offensively with one assist and managed two shots, including one on target.

In their next game, the Heat will travel to Langley, B.C., to take on the Trinity Western Spartans. The match is set for Friday, Sept. 5 at 7:15 p.m.

Game Notes:
- Prefontaine's goal was the first of his Heat career
