Late Vikes goal stuns men's soccer at home opener

After finding an equalizer with 15 minutes to go, Victoria steals three points thanks to late tally to earn 2-1 victory

KELOWNA, B.C. — The Victoria Vikes (2-0-1) defeated the UBCO Heat (0-1-0) by a 2-1 scoreline at Nonis Sports Field on Friday night, scoring both goals in the second half.

Playing in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd of UBCO Jump Start students, the first half between UBCO and Victoria was marked by a series of stoppages and defensive plays, with neither team finding the back of the net. Victoria applied early pressure with two corner kicks by Aiden Grew in the first six minutes. The Heat's Ronan Woodroffe made a crucial save in the 12th minute on a shot by Victoria's Matthew Pearse.

Both teams struggled with offsides, with UBCO caught offside twice and Victoria three times. Fouls were frequent, particularly against Victoria, which also saw a yellow card issued to Tristan Cornwell at the 32nd minute mark. The half ended with a 0-0 score.

The second half saw Victoria open the scoring with a goal by Ole Cameron in the 69th minute, assisted by Alexander Moody. The Heat responded with an equalizer from Matsugu, assisted by Charlie Prefontaine, in the 75th minute.

However, Victoria regained the lead late with a goal by Elliot Lupton, assisted by Evan Larson, in the 87th minute, sealing a 2-1 victory for the visitors.

Matsugu led the Heat with one goal and was efficient in his attempts, recording three shots on goal. Prefontaine contributed with an assist. In goal, Woodroffe made two saves over 90 minutes, facing four shots in total. Oliver Deveau also made an impact offensively with one shot on goal during the game.

Looking ahead, the Heat will host the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday, August 30. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. at Nonis Sports Field and admission to the game is free for everyone.
