Men's volleyball drops three-set decision to No.2 Wesmen

Heat unable to take a set off nationally ranked opponent

WINNIPEG, MAN. - The UBCO Heat fell to the Winnipeg Wesmen in straight sets, 25-22, 25-20, 25-18, on Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg, MB.

Lucas Woelders led the Heat in points with 16 across three sets, achieving a .355 hitting percentage with 15 kills on 31 attempts. Zach van Geel contributed 27 assists, the highest on the team, and added six digs.

In the first set of the match the Heat showed strong offensive efforts, with Jack Taylor and Lucas Woelders each contributing crucial kills. Zach van Geel facilitated the offense effectively, providing multiple assists. However, service errors plagued UBCO, contributing to their narrow defeat.

In the second set, the Heat fell to the Winnipeg Wesmen 25-20. Despite strong efforts from UBCO's Lucas Woelders, who recorded four kills, and Seba Manuel and Thys Weststrate with two kills a piece the Heat struggled with errors committed. Winnipeg's Paxton Koop and Isaiah Olfert capitalized on these errors, contributing to their team's success with notable kills and service aces.

In the third set UBCO's Seba Manuel led the attack with multiple kills, supported by Zach van Geel's assists. Despite Lucas Woelders and Manuel each recording blocks, the Heat's service errors impacted their ability to maintain momentum against Winnipeg's consistent scoring which ultimatley led to the Wesmen to securing a three set victory.

The Heat's overall record now sits at 9-10 while the Wesmen climb to 16-3 on the season.

Both teams will meet again tomorrow night for their final match of the 2024-25 regular season. First serve is set for 4:45 pm PST. Fans can catch the game live on CanadaWest.tv presented by BioSteel.
