ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — The UBCO Heat men's basketball team (1-4) dropped a 97-69 decision to the UFV Cascades on Tuesday night. The Heat's bench contributed 31 points, but the Cascades' 50 points in the paint secured their win.
Isaak Moore scored 14 points for the Heat, including two 3-pointers.
Jalen Shirley added 14 points and converted all five of his free-throw attempts.
Anthony Brady collected 13 rebounds and added six points, including two from beyond the arc.
Marcus Flores led the Cascades with 24 points, shooting 10-for-14 from the field, and added nine rebounds and two blocks.
The Cascades roared out to a big lead on home court on the strength of some strong shooting in the opening quarter. UFV shot 68 percent from the floor as they took a 33-15 lead after 10 minutes.
UBCO delivered a strong performance in the second quarter, outscoring UFV 25-15 to narrow the deficit. Their effective shooting included three 3-pointers and a perfect six-for-seven from the free-throw line. Additionally, they dominated the boards with a 17-10 rebounding advantage, led by Brady's key defensive efforts. At the end of the half, UFV held a 48-40 lead.
UFV took control of the game once again in the third quarter, outscoring the Heat 29-14. The Cascades scored 11 points off of UBCO turnovers and commanded the boards as they led 77-54.
Unable to close the gap, the Heat turned to their bench in the fourth quarter with their substitutes putting up 15 points in the frame. However, the team could not make a dent in the Cascades' advantage, falling 97-69.
Looking ahead, UBCO will face off against the U SPORTS No. 8-ranked UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 6 p.m. in Vancouver. Fans can catch the game live on CanadaWest.tv presented by BioSteel.
