LANGLEY, B.C. — The UBCO Heat women's basketball team (5-4) fell to the Trinity Western Spartans (7-2) 75-56 at the Langley Events Centre on Friday night. The Heat recorded eight steals and seven blocks but couldn't overcome a strong shooting performance from the home team.
UBCO was led by
Tennyson McCarthy who scored 11 points and recorded two blocks, contributing both offensively and defensively.
Stef Hart added 11 points while also collecting four rebounds.
Lily Pink registered seven points and two blocks, showing her ability to impact the game at both ends of the court.
Cassidy Buchanan stood out with a versatile performance for the Spartans, tallying 11 assists, two blocks, and two steals. Moriah Jansen led the team in scoring with 19 points, shooting an efficient 66.7 percent from the field and contributing three steals.
Trinity Western capitalized on turnovers, converting eight UBCO miscues into nine points, which contributed to a 25-16 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Heat struggled with ball security but found success inside, scoring eight points in the paint. Trinity Western's defence was effective, forcing eight turnovers and recording five steals, while also controlling the boards with 13 rebounds compared to UBCO's 10.
Trinity Western extended its lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Heat 18-12. The home team capitalized on efficient shooting, converting 53 percent of their field goals, including two 3-pointers, while UBCO struggled at 27 percent from the floor. Despite the Heat's defensive efforts, registering three blocks and four steals, Trinity Western maintained control through superior rebounding, leading 12-9 in total boards. At halftime, the Spartans led 43-28.
UBCO made a strong push in the third quarter, outscoring Trinity Western 17-12 by capitalizing on paint opportunities with ten points and converting a key 3-pointer. The Heat's defence added two blocks and two steals, which helped to limit the Spartns to zero 3-point field goals on four attempts. At the end of the third quarter, Trinity Western led 55-45.
Trinity Western secured the fourth quarter by effectively scoring in the paint, contributing 12 points compared to UBCO's four. Despite UBCO's effort on the boards with 13 rebounds, they struggled with shooting efficiency, converting only three of 21 field goal attempts.The Spartans' defensive efforts, including two blocks, limited UBCO's opportunities, leading to a 20-11 advantage for the quarter. After the final quarter, the scoreboard showed Trinity Western leading 75-56.
