Women's volleyball pushes No. 10 UFV to four sets in Friday night setback

UBCO earned a set victory on the road against the Cascades

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — The UBCO Heat women's volleyball team (3-4) dropped a hard-fought four set decision to the U SPORTS No. 10-ranked UFV Cascades (4-3) at the UFV Athletics Centre on Friday night, closing out the match with scores of 16-25, 25-17, 15-25, 21-25. The Heat shone in the second set with a commendable .310 hitting percentage.

Kylan Finseth spearheaded the Heat with 20 assists and chipped in with six digs. Ali Rathlef was impeccable in attack, converting all four attempts flawlessly. Madison Gardner was a force on offence, amassing five kills on six swings for an impressive .833 hitting percentage. On the defensive front, Natalie Funk added eight digs and was involved in three block assists.

Leading the charge for UFV was Lauren Attieh, who notched 17 kills and 19 points, along with 16 digs.

UFV set the pace early with a 6-1 lead in the opening set, thanks to key plays from Lauren Attieh and Mandi Feist. Cailin Bitter's playmaking was vital, aiding multiple kills as UFV wrapped up the set 25-16.

UBCO bounced back in the second set, overcoming UFV's early lead to seize a 25-17 victory, capitalizing on UFV's errors and a standout performance from Finseth, who delivered multiple assists. A critical 7-3 run for UBCO featured kills from Marija Josipovic and Kirsten Hill. UFV's attempts to bridge the gap were thwarted by timely blocks from Josipovic and Funk, as well as a service ace from Gardner.

UFV's strong service game clinched the third set 25-15, highlighted by Bitter's three aces during an early 5-0 run. UBCO closed the gap to 14-14 with a series of points, including a block by Josipovic and Funk, but UFV answered with a decisive stretch as Lauren Attieh delivered two aces and Talia Attieh added multiple kills to seal the set.

In the fourth set, UFV surged ahead with Talia Attieh's three consecutive kills, establishing a 5-1 lead. UBCO fought back with a balanced attack, narrowing the score to 12-11 with key kills from Funk and Rathlef. However, UFV pulled away late with service aces from Naomi Unger and a decisive kill from Lauren Attieh to clinch the set 25-21.

Looking forward, UBCO will face the UFV Cascades again on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 5:45 p.m. in Abbotsford, B.C. Fans can catch the game live on CanadaWest.tv presented by BioSteel.
