Conde, Moore propel men's basketball to win over Timberwolves

Heat duo combines for 57 points as UBCO gets back into the win column with 86-74 victory

KELOWNA, B.C. — The UBCO Heat men's basketball team (2-5) claimed an 86-74 win over the UNBC Timberwolves (2-4) at the UBCO Gymnasium on Friday night thanks to a pair of outstanding performances from Lamine Conde and Isaak Moore.

Moore delivered a career-high 28 points, hitting six 3-pointers and nailing all six of his free throw attempts. Conde was also a powerhouse, adding 29 points with 4-for-5 shooting from beyond the arc and pulling down eight rebounds. Jalen Shirley notched a double-double with 16 points and 10 assists, also snagging four steals. Anthony Brady bolstered the defence with two blocks, alongside his five rebounds.

Tony Kibonge led the Timberwolves' scoring with 19 points, connecting on 7 of 16 field goals, including five from deep. Justin Sunga orchestrated the offence smoothly, handing out seven assists while contributing seven points and six rebounds.

The game kicked off with the Timberwolves taking an early lead, but the Heat quickly countered. Conde ignited UBCO's charge with a three-pointer two minutes into the contest, closing the gap. Moore further tilted the balance with back-to-back three-pointers mid-way through the frame, putting the Heat in control. Consistent defence and scoring paced UBCO to a nine-point lead by the end of the first, finishing with a 25–16 lead.

UBCO held firm in the second quarter, stretching their lead to 11 points within the opening minute. The two teams would go back and forth all quarter but despite UNBC's efforts to narrow the margin, UBCO ended the half ahead, leading 41–34 at halftime.

Conde powered a strong start for UBCO in the third with a layup, pushing their lead to nine. Shirley was crucial, assisting on key plays, including Conde's three-pointer three minutes in, maintaining the Heat's edge. Although the Timberwolves mounted a comeback, capped by Kibonge's tying layup late in the quarter, UBCO answered assertively. Shirley's layup shortly after and Moore's three-pointer with 44 seconds left reestablished their advantage. Moore capped the third with another three-pointer as the buzzer sounded, leaving UBCO ahead 62–56.

The Heat entered the fourth quarter in stride, led by Conde's early 3-pointer, widening their lead. Moore and Mathias Schertzer made critical plays, with Moore's jumper and Schertzer's defensive rebound sustaining momentum. Despite the Timberwolves' attempts to close in, including a Kibonge 3-pointer, UBCO's defence held strong, minimizing turnovers and capitalizing on free throws.

As the quarter advanced, Brady drained a crucial 3-pointer late, extending the lead to double digits. Moore iced the game with two final free throws. UBCO outscored UNBC 24-18 in the final quarter, sealing an 86-74 victory.

Looking ahead, the Heat will host the Timberwolves again at the UBCO Gymnasium in Kelowna, B.C., on Saturday, Nov. 15. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. and tickets for the game can be purchased by visiting GoHeat.ca/Tickets.
