HEAT THIS WEEK: Volleyball teams set to host 4th annual Pride Night against Manitoba; basketball travels to Alberta

Heat volleyball teams are back on home court as they get set to face the Manitoba Bisons while basketball and men's cross country heads to Edmonton

KELOWNA, B.C. - The UBC Okanagan Heat volleyball teams will be back in action on home court once again this weekend as they host the nationally-ranked Manitoba Bisons. Meanwhile, women's and men's basketball return to action as they travel to Edmonton to kick off 2025 against the Alberta Pandas and Golden Bears while men's track will also run in Edmonton at the Golden Bears Open.

This Friday night both of our volleyball teams will be hosting the Heat's 4th annual Pride Night where both teams will celebrate inclusivity on our campus and in sport.  Be sure to come dressed in Pride colors as there will be mini Pride flags being handed out and an area for photos to be taken. That's not all as in between the sets of both games there will be an opportunity to win a $200 Lululemon gift card by participating in the Balloon Cup Push contest!

Men's volleyball is at home again this weekend as they have a double header weekend against the U SPORTS No. 10-ranked Manitoba Bisons where they will be looking to secure their first win against the Bisons since 2022.

Last weekend the Heat had a challenging opponent as they took on the nationally ranked UBC Thunderbirds where they manage to take a set off the 'Birds in each contest. On Friday night Seba Manuel and Lucas Woelders each recorded ten kills helping their team secure a first set victory. On Saturday Sam Jablonski led his team putting up a total of 12 kills and 13 points.

Women's volleyball has their second weekend at home of 2025 against the reigning Canada West Champions and U SPORTS No. 7-ranked Manitoba Bisons.

Last weekend women's volleyball lost to the top ranked UBC Thinderbirds on Friday night in three but came back with an excellent effort, pushing the 'Birds to five sets, handing UBC just their third and fourth sets lost all season. Amaya Perry one of this week's UBCO Athletes of the Week and she shined for the Heat in that contest as she tallied 12 kills, 19 digs and an ace to put her just ten aces shy of breaking the school's all-time career record held by Heat alumni Megan Festival.

Men's basketball is on their road for their first weekend of games in 2025 as they battle against the Alberta Golden Bears.

Heading into the second half of their season the Heat look to Jas Dhudwal, a fifth-year forward, who is a rebounding machine as he currently ranks second in the conference for rebounding at 10.6 rebounds per game.

Women's Basketball looks to start the second half of their season with a bang as they tip off against the USPORTS No. 8-ranked Alberta Pandas.

Over the holiday break the Heat traveled to Calgary where they faced the Dinos in a pair of exhibition games. In the opening contest, Lauren Foullong of Orangeville, Ont., led her team as she put up 13 points, 12 of which came off three-point shot, as well as three rebounds, but it just wasn't enough as the team fell to the Dinos 61-47.

Men's track is back in action this weekend as they are also traveling to Alberta to participate in the annual Golden Bears Open. Basil Parkins, a third-year runner from Victoria, B.C. will be the sole athlete representing the Heat as he'll compete in the 800m and 1000m races. The last time Parkins competed in the Golden Bears open he finished 16th in the 1000m race and 26th in the 1500m race.
