EDMONTON - In their penultimate game of the season, the UBC Okanagan men's volleyball team would fall in five sets to the hosting MacEwan Griffins by scores of 15-25, 25-23, 26-24, 26-28, 10-15 as the Heat's
Cade Hudson and
Lucas Woelders each recorded career-highs.
Hudson, a Burnaby, B.C. native, recorded a new personal-best 54 assists in the match while
Lucas Woelders fired home a career-high 19 kills. Friday's match marked Hudson's second-ever 50-plus assist game, both coming in his last eight outings.
The Griffins responded with a historic performance of their own, in the form of Seth Birkholz's (Edmonton) 13 kills on 20 attacks, setting a new program record for hitting percentage in a five-set match at .600.
Across the net from Birkholz, was Tsawwassen, B.C.'s
Teo Ardanaz, who had an efficient night in his own right. The fifth-year connected on all of his first seven attacks, also finishing the game with a .600 hitting percentage off nine kills, his program's second-best hitting percentage in a five-set match.
Ardanaz would help his team bounce back after a first-set loss, as the Heat grabbed the next two. The senior, playing his second last Canada West regular season game, went without an error through the first four sets.
In the final two frames, MacEwan's comeback was spurred by their defence. Mitchel Gorman (Grand Prairie, Alta.), Daylan Andison (Edmonton, Alta.) and Daniel Hebert (St. Vincent, Alta.) covered nearly the whole floor, combining for 39 digs in the match.
While the Heat were dominate at the net, outblocking the Griffins 15-5, their Albertan counterparts won the reception game by 19 with 63 digs.
