Men's Basketball close season with loss to Bisons

In his final game with the Heat, Hafith Moallin takes charge, leading the team in an intense matchup against the Manitoba Bisons

WINNIPEG - The UBC Okanagan Heat men's basketball team brought their A-game on Saturday evening, taking the fight to the Bisons with unwavering pressure right from the tip-off. They surged ahead early, establishing a solid lead and matching the playoff-bound Bisons play-for-play in a fiercely contested first half. Despite their playoff dreams dashed, the Heat battled to the end, but ultimately fell short with a final score of 81-72 at the IGAC Gymnasium in Manitoba.

Gavin Ashworth Grand Prairie, Alta., and Hafith Moallin of Mississauga, Ont., kept the game close with their timely shooting throughout the game. Moallin finished with a game-high 21 points while Ashworth finished with 18 points, shooting an impressive 80 percent from beyond the arc.

The Heat's strong defensive effort early on stifled Manitoba's offence, forcing them into a number of scoring droughts. Jas Dhudwal of Surrey, B.C., was a defensive force for UBCO, tallying 15 rebounds and 3 blocks, securing his spot in the Top 10 for blocks in a single season in Canada West history.

Moallin's relentless energy ignited the Heat, fueling his remarkable career steals record with an additional 4 steals in this game, bringing his total to 176. That mark means he finishes his career tied for 15th all-time in Canada West history for steals.

Despite establishing a commanding 13-point lead, the Heat encountered a resilient comeback from the Bisons, resulting in a tied game at 36 after Manitoba's Mason Kraus drained a pivotal three-pointer. As they entered the second half, the Heat intensified their defensive pressure, ready to confront the Bisons head-on.

In the closing moments, Moallin delivered a breathtaking buzzer-beater, soaring through the air to narrow the Heat's deficit to just one point against the Bisons. However, despite their valiant effort, the Bisons secured the victory.

WHERE THEY SIT

The loss concludes the Heat's season with a 6-14 record, while the Bisons improve to 13-7 in the Canada West standings. The Bisons will now go to host the Canada West Championship tournament in two weeks' time.
