KAMLOOPS, B.C. – The UBC Okanagan Heat women's volleyball team gave the U SPORTS No. 9 ranked Thompson Rivers WolfPack all they could handle on Friday evening but ultimately fell in four sets (17-25, 25-22, 23-25, 18-25) on the road.
After dropping the opening set to the hosts, the Heat responded with a strong second set, rallying on the strength of their blocking and some timely kills by
Olivia Boulding of Victoria to even the match at one.
UBCO carried that momentum into the third set and grabbed the early lead before a 10-point run from the WolfPack flipped the set in their favour. UBCO would continue to battle but TRU would pull out the set win late to take the lead in the match.
In the fourth, the WolfPack took control early as they held on to get the win in their home opener.
Both teams would finish the night posting strong numbers at the net, with TRU recording 13 blocks while the Heat nearly matched that number with 11 of their own.
Amaya Perry of Chin, Alta., was the Heat's top point getter, finishing with 15 points thanks to 11 kills, an ace and three total blocks while adding 13 digs.
Meanwhile, Brooklyn Olfert of Winnipeg led Thompson Rivers with 13 kills and 13 digs.
With the win, TRU prevents UBCO from claiming the women's Presidents' Cup trophy as the Heat now hold a 3-1 edge in the annual competition between the two Interior B.C. rivals.
In the Canada West standings, the Heat now sit at 2-1 while the WolfPack remain undefeated at 3-0.
The two teams will rematch on Saturday, November 2 with first serve set for 4:45 p.m. Fans can catch the action live on CanadaWest.tv presented by Biosteel.
