The Heat, playing their first official games under new head coach
Scott Koskie, got their preseason off to a winning start with a straight-sets victory over the Cougars on Thursday night.
Third-year opposite
Lucas Woelders of Langley, B.C., made a strong impression on his new coach with a 13-point performance to lead the Heat, including firing 12 kills while hitting an impressive .417 percent.
Fellow third-year
Sam Jablonski of Kelowna, B.C., also got his year off to a good start, recording eight kills, three aces and two blocks for 12.5 points.
The Heat middle duo of
Ashton South of Calgary, and
Thys Weststrate of Kelowna, B.C., combined for 10 kills and 16.5 points in the victory.
While UBCO would drop their next two contests against perennially nationally-ranked opponents, the team showed well against both UBC and Trinity Western, taking the Thunderbirds to four sets, while keeping all three sets against the Spartans competitive.
The Heat will now turn their focus to preparing for their regular season opener at home when they host the MacEwan Griffins on Friday, October 25. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the UBCO Gymnasium.
