KELOWNA, B.C. - Playing at home in front of their biggest and most energetic crowd of the year, the UBC Okanagan Heat women's basketball team furiously stormed back in the fourth quarter, down as many as 14, before the UBC Thunderbirds hit a late game winner to claim an 80-77 victory on Friday night at the UBCO Gymnasium.
The Heat looked to have capped off the comeback try when
Sofia Ainsa Lluch (Mahon, Spain) knocked down an improbable shot with 24 seconds to go in the fourth.
It was a reciprocal night between the fans and Ainsa Lluch. The Spaniard ignited the crowd with a handful of highlight reel plays, with the crowd getting increasingly louder with each basket. The fifth-year guard would finish the night six points, eight assists and two steals.
For the 'Birds, Olivia Weekes (Winnipeg) led her team on numerous runs. Starting the game making six of her first eight shots, Weekes would finish the night with a game-high 25 points
A large part of the UBCO's comeback stemmed from
Jaeli Ibbetson (Kelowna, B.C.)Â who scored 13 points in the fourth quarter alone. The fourth-year would score 20 points in the match, while grabbing 12 boards off the glass for her ninth double-double of the season.
Providing vigor off the bench for the Heat was rookie guard
Temi Aina (Kamloops, B.C.) who chipped in a career-high eight points in 14 minutes.
TOP PERFOMERS
Kelsey Falk - UBCO Heat
Falk (Vernon, B.C.) started the game on a mission, scoring the opening basket of the match, nine in the first quarter and 15 by halftime. UBCO's captain scored a season-high 22 points, with six rebounds, two assists and a block.
Olivia Weekes - UBC Thunderbirds
The third-year guard had an efficient night, scoring a season-high 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting. Weekes would also finish the match with 13 rebounds and three steals.
WHERE THEY SIT
The Heat fall to 7-8 on the season, staying in ninth place in the conference's standings while the UBC wins their 11th consecutive match improving to 15-2 on the year.
