Men's volleyball drops five setter in Kamloops

Teo Ardanaz broke UBCO's program record for career block assists as the Heat fell in a riviting five set match

KAMLOOPS, B.C. - In the first men's volleyball matchup in the battle for the  Presidents' Cup, the UBC Okanagan Heat took the TRU WolfPack in the distance in a back-and-forth contest, ultimatley falling in five sets (25-19, 17-25, 25-19, 30-32, 15-12).

Teo Ardanaz, the veteran middleman from Tsawassen, B.C., is now UBCO's record holder in block assists, recording six in Friday's match, bringing his total to 247 in his career, four more than Joshua Harvey, who played parts of six seasons for the Heat between 2012 and 2018.


After the 'Pack took the first set, the Heat stormed back with a vengeance.  Ashton South (Calgary, Alta.) a second-year middle notched four of his career-high 12 kills in the second stanza, proving to be a key component of the visiting team's set win.
In a nail-bitting fourth set, UBCO battled off five match points to take the set 32-30, forcing a deciding fifth.
In the night's final set, the Heat put up a strong battle, but the 'Pack leaned on experience to take set and ultimately the match in five.

PRESIDENTS' CUP UPDATE
The Heat men now have their backs on the wall with basketball and volleyball both needing to win their respective matches to force a tiebreaker in the competition.

TOP PERFORMERS
Ashton South - UBCO Heat
The second-year middle from Calgary, Alta. set a career-highs tonight in kills (12), blocks (7) and points (15.5). It also marks the first time in his career with consecutive matches of 10+ points.

Sam Flowerday - TRU Wolfpack
The Aussie outside-hitter led his team to victory tonight earning six service aces and putting down 20 kills, also setting a career-high with 27.0 points

WHERE THEY STAND
After tonight's loss, the Heat are now sit with a record of 1-16 while the Thompson Rivers improves to 8-7

The Heat are still in Kamloops, B.C. tomorrow as they close out Presidents' Cup weekend facing off against the TRU WolfPack one more time.  The first serve is set for 4:45 PST fans can catch the action live on Canada West TV.
