Women's volleyball takes set off Dinos in loss at home

Amaya Perry and Olivia Tymkiw put up big numbers but Heat fall in four sets to Calgary to open weekend doubleheader

KELOWNA, B.C - The UBC Okanagan Heat women's volleyball team took one set off the visiting Calgary Dinos in an exciting match on Friday night at the UBCO Gymansium, falling 18-25, 25-23, 19-25 and 26-28.

Despite dropping the opening set, the Heat delivered a strong performance showcasing new faces in the starting lineup including rookie Marija Josipovic of West Kelowna, B.C., and Lexi Prefontaine of Kelowna, B.C.

Amaya Perry, the fourth-year outside hitter from Chin, Alta., came off the bench to make an impact in the second set, firing a kill and an ace. Her ace gives her 123 career aces as she continues to climb the Canada West record books, now ranked 23rd in conference history.

In tandem with Perry, Abigail Dueck, the fourth-year setter from Winnipeg, also came off the bench and took charge of the attack, delivering an outstanding performance with 14 assists as well as contributing two kills to drive the Heat to their set victory.
However, the Dinos would go on to win the next two sets, ultimately taking the match 3-1


TOP PERFORMERS
Olivia Tymkiw - UBCO HEAT

Efforts from the third-year outside hitter hailing from Coldstream, B.C., would not go unnoticed as she would contribute 13 kills and nine digs, adding a total of 13 points to the Heat's efforts on Friday evening. 

Daisy Olson - Calgary Dinos
The second-year outside hitter and product of Airdrie, Alta., was a dominant player for the Dinos, nailing a team-high of 13 kills as well as finding three serving aces, three blocks and nine digs for Calgary.

WHERE THEY SIT
Following the Friday evening loss, the Heat drop to a 5-10 record in the Canada West standings, whereas the Calgary Dinos advanced to a 7-8 record. 

UP NEXT
The Heat will return to home court, tomorrow, Saturday, January 13th, looking to find a weekend split as they compete once more against the Dinos to close off the doubleheader matchup. First serve is set for 4 p.m. and tickets for the game will be available at the door.
