Men's soccer falls to Trinity Western to split opening weekend

The Heat go 1-1-0 on the road to open 2023 after a 2-1 setback against the Spartans

LANGLEY, B.C. - After a team-best four shots, Zack MacInnes continued his impressive start to the season, netting his first career goal in the 24th minute, but the UBC Okanagan Heat would ultimately fall 2-1 to the Trinity Western Spartans on Saturday night.

MacInnes, a Kelowna native, would beat his man and fire a shot over Spartans keeper Yeshua Silwamba, equalizing the game before the end of the first half. Silwamba, from Maple Ridge, B.C., would make a pair of saves in the winning effort.

Trinity Western's Charles Nana (Calgary, Alta.) opened the scoring 13th minute while rookie forward Jace Wiebe's (Langley, B.C.) first Canada West goal went down as the game's winner.

Between the pipes, Vancouver, B.C.'s Tyson Gugushe made four stops in his debut start for the Heat.

First-years Rhys Gustafson (Kamloops, B.C.) and Rory Clements (Squamish, B.C.) made their first appearances in Heat colours as second-half substitutes. Oliver Deveau of Vancouver, made the first start of his university career, recording a shot on net in 56 minutes on the pitch.

The loss sees the Heat split their season-opening weekend, sitting at 1-1-0 through two games. The Spartans stay undefeated at 2-0-0 after a win over last year's national champion the Thompson Rivers WolfPack on Friday.

The Heat's next match comes on September 1st when they host the UBC Thunderbirds (1-0-0) for their home opener at Nonis Sports Field. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
