Men's volleyball falls to Wesmen in home opener

Heat manage to grab a set from Winnipeg but Wesmen pull away in final two sets to take the victory

KELOWNA, B.C. - The UBC Okanagan Heat men's volleyball opened up their 2023-24 regular season in front of a boisterous crowd at home on Friday night against the Winnipeg Wesmen and despite managing to take a set off the visitors, fell in four sets by scores of 23-25, 25-22, 12-25 and 19-25.

The match opened up with a strong start from the Heat, trading points with Winnipeg and keeping it close until the Wesmen pulled ahead to take the set 25-23. Renn Petryk from Edmonton, was a force to be reckoned with leading the Heat offence with 4 kills in the opening set while setter Zach van Geel's (Calgary) full talent was also on display in the opening frame.
The Heat found their momentum in the second set, highlighted by a four-point serving streak from Lucas Woelders of Langley, B.C.  The Heat and Wesmen would battle until a strategic timeout would push the Heat to the set victory 25-22, evening the score at 1-1.

However, Winnipeg would take over early in the third set, grabbing control of the match and closed out the opening game of the season in four sets.
