Substitute Sun scores winner to clinch third place for women’s soccer

For the first time in program history, the Heat will compete in the Canada West quarter-finals following their 3-1 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – Substitute Megan Sun scored the game-winning goal in the 75th minute to lift the UBC Okanagan Heat women's soccer team past the UNBC Timberwolves by a score of 3-1 on Friday night.

With the win, the Heat, who have been making program history all season long, accomplished another first. The victory guaranteed them third place in the Canada West Pacific division, advancing them to the conference quarter-finals for the first time.

In a match that the Heat dominated from start to finish, outshooting UNBC 27-5, UBCO got out to a hot start when midfielder Annika Gross of Kelowna, B.C., scored her first in a Heat uniform just 10 minutes in to give the visitors the early advantage

However, the hosts evened the score-line just seven minutes later when Kambria Mellum of Kelowna, B.C., scored off a corner kick to tie the game.

The two teams would remain deadlocked, despite the Heat increasing the pressure as they looked for the win that would guarantee their spot in the quarter-finals.

The breakthrough finally came just 15 minutes before the final whistle. Sun, who came into the match at halftime, took a great feed from Abigail Taneda of West Kelowna, B.C., running in behind the Timberwolves defensive line before firing a shot short-side to break a 1-1 tie.
The goal was the second of the season for Sun, and first since the opening match of the year against Victoria, while Taneda earned her fifth assist of the season, equalling the team record she set last season.

Forward Stefanie Young of Kelowna, B.C., would secure the result in the 90th minute with bullet shot for her 14th goal of the season.

That goal moved her into a tie for fifth all-time in Canada West history for most goals in a single season with one game remaining on the schedule.
TOP PERFORMERS
Annika Gross – UBCO

The third-year midfielder had one of her best games in a Heat uniform as she willed her team to victory. She finished the match with five shots, including two shots on goal, while also scoring her first career goal with UBCO.

Kambria Mellum – UNBC
The second-year defender had a strong showing against her hometown team, scoring her team's lone goal while her efforts on the defensive line helped keep the game tied for much of the match.

WHERE THEY STAND
Thanks to their third-consecutive win, a new team record for longest winning streak, UBCO improves to 8-3-2 on the season. They sit three points up on the Victoria Vikes (7-4-2) in the conference standings but hold the tiebreak over the Vikes thanks to the Heat's 2-1 win back in August.

Meanwhile, the Timberwolves remain winless at 0-12-1 on the year.

UP NEXT
The Heat will close out the regular season on Sunday in Vancouver with a showdown against the U SPORTS No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds (12-1-0). It will be the first matchup between the squads since UBC earned a narrow 3-2 victory over the Heat in September.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and the game can be seen live on CanadaWest.tv.
