Men’s basketball struggle to contain Cougars in home setback

The Heat's path to the postseason took a hit on Friday in a 99-85 loss to Mount Royal

KELOWNA, B.C. - The UBC Okanagan Heat men's basketball team had no answer for Holt Tomie as the third-year guard poured in 27 points to lead the Mount Royal Cougars to a 99-85 victory over the Heat on Friday evening at The Furnace.
 
BB Chuks-Mady (Hamilton) was a spark plug off the bench for the Heat. His constant energy kept the Heat within striking distance the entire night as he finished with a very efficient 18 points while adding six rebounds and one emphatic chase down block.   
Elan Kimpton-Cuellar (Roberts Creek, B.C.) was tough in the paint for the Heat. Going against a talented Cougars front court, Kimpton-Cuellar was able to record 13 points while also grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. 
 
Keivonte Watts (Utica, Mississippi) gave the Cougars some much needed insurance down the stretch as the Heat were looking to climb back into the game. Watts finished with 22 points and six rebounds push the visitors over the finish line late in the contest.
 
TOP PERFORMERS
BB Chuks-Mady – UBCO

The fourth-year forward was a force for the Heat. He finished the night shooting 8-for-11 from the field to pace his best offensive output of the season. His presence was also felt on the defensive end as he helped create plenty of stops.
 
Holt Tomie – MRU
The third-year guard from Calgary was once again a leader for the Cougars on both the offensive and defensive ends. He led all players with 27 points while grabbing eight rebounds and distributing five assists.
 
WHERE THEY SIT
The Heat drop to 4-9 on the season as they sit tied for 14th in the conference, two games out of the final playoff spot in Canada West. As for the Cougars, they improve to 7-4 and are sitting alone in fifth in the conference.
 
UP NEXT
The Heat are back in action at The Furnace on Saturday, January 14 to wrap up their weekend doubleheader with Mount Royal. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. and tickets for the game are available at the door.
