Second half comeback falls short as men's basketball drops decision to Cascades

Box Score

KELOWN, B.C. - One day after their most impressive victory of the season, the UBC Okanagan Heat men's basketball team were unable to duplicate the same complete game on Sunday afternoon as they fell 97-79 to the UFV Cascades at The Fruance.

After the Heat won in dominant fashion on Saturday, the Cascades responded with a strong performance on Sunday. The Heat found themselves in a hole early, as avoidable mistakes plagued their offence and after the first half of basketball, the Cascades were up 53-36.

However, the third quarter was a different story for the UBCO as Scarborough, Ont., product, Kevin Hamlet, helped pull the Heat back into the game. One day after a season-best performance, Hamlet started to find his groove, and got it going at the free-throw line. The third-year forward was perfect at the line, going 8-for-8 along with 7-for-17 shooting as he finished the game with 22 points and nine rebounds, and leading the Heat's comeback efforts.

The Heat showed their composure in the second half with aggression on both ends of the court. BB Chucks-Mady of Hamilton, was tireless on the glass, cleaning up eight boards and putting in 15 points. Coming off an injury where he missed three games, Liban Yousef of Edmonton, made his mark with 12 points, four rebounds, and three assists. With the team coming together, the Heat erased their 17-point deficit to just one. However, ultimately it was turnovers that would cost the home side to come all the way back as they finished with 21.

The Cascades came into the game with a chip on their shoulder and were dialled in all night, shooting 50 percent from the field. Quesnel, B.C., native Jordan Sekhon finished the game with 30 points leading all scorers and leading his team to the win.

With the loss, the Heat fall to 2-12 on the year while UFV improves to 9-5.

Looking to take the many positives from the weekend, the Heat will be back in action on Thursday, February 10th when they will host the Trinity Western Spartans. Tickets for the game can be purchased at the door.
