Bussard bullies women's volleyball past Bisons

After close first set, the Heat dominate the final two sets to snap their two-game losing streak

KELOWNA, B.C. - Jade Bussard had a game-high 12 kills to help the UBC Okanagan Heat women's volleyball team snap their two-game losing streak on Friday evening with a straight sets victory (26-24, 25-18, 25-13) over the Manitoba Bisons.

Coming out ready in the first set, the Heat kept the match close with no more than a four point difference between the two teams.Trailing by two in the late first, rookie middle Madison Gardner of Vernon, B.C., found back-to-back blocks to tie the match at 19. Using the momentum garnered from those blocks, the Heat battled and hung on to capture the opening set.

Fired up to expand their lead, the Heat used their serves to their advantage. UBCO picked up four aces in the middle frame, including two from setter Abigail Dueck of Winnipeg, to help take the second set.

Going for the three-set sweep, the Heat dominated the third set as Bussard, a native of Red Deer, Alta., nailed down two big kills to take an early lead on the Bisons. Growing their lead, while working well as a team, the Heat recorded 11 kills, three blocks, and another serving ace to cruise to a three-set win.
