Women’s soccer’s playoffs hopes suffer a blow in Calgary

Heat drop 4-0 decision to the Dinos on Friday night, setting up a must-win against UNBC on Sunday to get into a tiebreaker for the final playoff spot

CALGARY - The UBC Okanagan Heat women's soccer team's playoff aspirations took a crucial hit Friday in Calgary as they suffered a 4-0 loss to the Calgary Dinos.

Calgary peppered Heat keeper Molly Race with 24 shots, 13 on target as the Vernon, B.C., product made a season-best nine saves.

It was a flurry of a first half for the Dinos, who found all four of the game's goals in the first 45 minutes.

TOP PERFORMERS
Sophie Campbell - UBCO
The second-year forward totaled a career-high three shots on Friday, with one on target. Campbell played all 90 minutes for the Heat.

Rachel Barlow - Calgary
The U-SPORTS leader in assists added another to her total (10) in the win. She also potted her sixth goal of the season in the 21st minute, tying her for the most points (16) in Canada West this season.

WHERE THEY SIT
The loss leaves the Heat three points back of the final playoff spot in the Pacific division, sitting on a 3-7-3 record. UBCO will need a win in their season finale on Sunday, along with some help from other opponents, to enter a tiebreaking scenario for the fifth and final postseason berth.

Calgary's win clinches them a spot in the playoffs and all but secures them a third-place finish in the Pacific Division with a 7-4-2 record.

UP NEXT
UBCO will travel to Prince George to wrap up their regular season against the UNBC Timberwolves on Sunday. Kickoff is slated for 2:15 p.m., and the game can be seen live on Canada West TV.
