Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Nicholas Taylor

Women's soccer earns a point in tough battle with Vikes

The Heat picked up a crucial point in their push for the playoffs as they earned a 0-0 draw with the Victoria Vikes on the road.

KELOWNA, B.C. – The UBC Okanagan Heat women's soccer team earned a point on the road on Saturday evening as they played to a nil-nil draw with the Victoria Vikes.

Opportunities were hard to come by in the first half, as both teams played tremendous defence early on. The Vikes had multiple opportunities to capitalize on in the opening 45 minutes but ultimately they could not find the back of the net.

Both teams came out of the half with more energy. The Heat got the first opportunity of the second half with a strike from Sophie Campbell (Surrey, B.C.) in the 47th minute.

Victoria also had many opportunities in the second half. Their best came on a header by Victoria Kara Skirzyk (Delta, B.C.) that got by the Heat's Molly Race (Vernon, B.C.) but Sonia Sarai (New Westminster, B.C.) miraculously cleared the ball to preserve the point for UBCO

TOP PERFORMERS

Sonia Sarai – UBCO

Second-year midfielder Sonia Sarai played a fantastic game and made the play of the game as well. What looked to be a goal for the Vikes, Sarai miraculously cleared the ball just before it crossed, keeping the game tied.

Sophie Fingarson – UVIC

The first-year midfielder from Calgary played a fantastic match for the Vikes, tallying four shots and one shot on goal.

WHERE THEY SIT

The draw puts the UBCO Heat's record at 2-5-3 while the Victoria Vikes now sit at 4-4-3. The point was crucial for the Heat as they gain ground on the Thompson Rivers WolfPack for the fifth and final playoff spot in the Pacific division. Meanwhile, the Vikes move a point up on the WolfPack for fourth place in the division.

UP NEXT

The Heat will hit the road once again next week as they head to Kamloops to take on their rivals, the TRU Wolfpack. The match will take place at 5:30 p.m. on October 7th.
